Salvage car statistics across the UK
Items
The most commonly scrapped engine size is 1.6L, reflecting its popularity across everyday hatchbacks and family cars in the UK. If your salvage vehicle still has an intact engine of this size, it'll be one of its most valuable parts.
A Vauxhall Corsa was once scrapped with just 55 miles (the lowest of all 132,090 vehicles in our data!). At such low mileage, normal wear and MOT issues can’t be the cause, so this was almost certainly a Cat A or Cat B write-off. These categories mean the car can never return to the road, only either destroyed completely.
The youngest car we've ever scrapped a 2023 Ford Fiesta. Since a two-year-old car wouldn’t have needed an MOT yet, it was almost certainly a Cat A, B, S or N write-off from an accident, fire or flood. Situations like this show that even nearly new cars can end up scrapped if repairs cost more than their value.
The highest-mileage car scrapped was a Rover 75 with 999,999 miles. At that stage, the vehicle’s market value would have been so low that even minor damage would trigger an insurance write-off. Insurers decide based on repair costs versus value and here, almost any repair outweighed the car’s worth.

What we offer you = what we pay you.
Body

A lot of scrap car services show you a nice high quote, then slash it later. Maybe there are “missing parts” or “damage not disclosed”. Maybe they don’t offer free collection but were careful not to show that. or “towing costs” as reasons to pay you less once they’ve already booked the collection. We don’t play that game with you.

Body

You might not realise this, but the scrap value of your car doesn’t fluctuate much with condition. Whether it’s dented, won’t start, or has half a bumper hanging off, it still has value in its materials. That’s why even seriously damaged or “beyond saving” vehicles can get you a solid payout.

Because we’ve built direct relationships with licensed ATFs across the UK, we’re able to keep our own margins lean. That means more of the car’s value goes straight to you. Our pricing is upfront and transparent, and the process is fully automated to keep everything fair and efficient from start to finish.

Sell My Salvage Car FAQs
Items
Title
How do I sell a salvage car in the UK?
Description
With Car.co.uk, you just enter your reg and postcode on our site, we give you an instant quote, and if you like it, you pick a collection time that works for you. We collect it for free and pay you instantly. Done.
Now, if you’re doing it on your own, it’s a bit more involved. You’ll need to find a qualified buyer or scrap yard, get quotes or collect offers from a listing, arrange transport if the car’s not drivable and make sure you’ve got the right documents (i.e. the V5C).
And of course, you have to inform the DVLA when the car changes hands or is written off.
Title
Can I sell my salvage car for cash?
Description
You can sell your salvage car for cash if you’re doing a private sale, like selling it to someone for spares or repairs. But if you’re scrapping it through a licensed ATF, then no, UK law doesn’t allow cash payments.
In 2013, the DVLA introduced that law to crack down on metal theft, so all legitimate scrap transactions have to be done via bank transfer or cheque. Through us, you’ll always be paid through a fast bank transfer.
Title
Is it legal to sell a salvage car?
Description
Whether or not it’s legal to sell a salvage car depends on its write-off category. If it’s Category A, you cannot. If if it’s Cat B, you’re allowed to part it out but the shell has to be crushed. If it’s Cat S (structural damage), you’re allowed to sell it after fixing and re-registering it. Cat N (non-structural damage) cars can be resold without re-registration.
Title
What’s the best way to sell a salvage car?
Description
The best way to sell a salvage car really depends on how badly it’s damaged and what you’re willing to deal with.
There’s a whole section of the trade that makes a living flipping Cat S and Cat N cars. They know what they’re doing; they’ve got access to parts and body shops; they buy low, repair cheap and sell high. If you’ve got that kind of setup, selling it privately makes a lot of sense.
But remember that the insurance company already did the math and decided the car wasn’t worth fixing. So unless you’ve got some special angle or it’s a rare model, you’re likely looking at a lot of time, effort, and upfront costs that aren’t going to be worth the risk.
For most people, scrapping is faster, safer and often more profitable overall once you factor in time and logistics.
Title
Can you sell a salvage title car online?
Description
Yes. If you want to sell a salvage title car online, you have two options. If you have a Cat S or Cat N car, you can list it on a platform like Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree. Alternatively, you can have us take it off your hands instantly, regardless of its write-off category.
Title
How do I find a salvage yard near me?
Description
When you enter your reg and postcode on our site, we instantly match you with the best local yards in our network. These are places we’ve vetted, and you’ll be able to compare their offers side by side before arranging a pickup.
Title
Can I sell my car for scrap value?
Description
If the car’s written off, not running or just not worth fixing, you can absolutely sell it for its scrap value. That price is mostly based on weight and what parts can be salvaged, so even if the car’s in rough shape, it’s still worth something because the metal’s there.
Title
Where can I sell my totaled car?
Description
You’d sell it to an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) — that’s the official term for a licensed scrap yard. There are over 2,500 ATFs across the UK, and we work with a big chunk of them. You could track one down yourself and try to get a quote, but with us, you just pop in your reg and postcode and we’ll match you with the best one near you.
Title
How much can I get for a salvage car?
Description
It depends on a few things: the type of car, its weight and the current market value of scrap metal.
A small hatchback might get you a couple hundred quid. A heavier diesel or 4x4? You could be looking at £300 to £400. If it’s a salvageable Cat S or Cat N, and parts are in decent condition, you might get even more than pure scrap value.
Best way to find out? Just enter your reg and postcode on our site. We’ll give you a live quote based on your location and vehicle specs.
Title
Do I need to tell the buyer it’s a salvage car?
Description
If you’re selling privately, you’re legally required to disclose that the car’s a write-off (it’ll show up on a vehicle history check anyway). Failing to do so will land you in hot water for misrepresentation.
The good news is: if you sell through us, we only deal with buyers who already know the car is salvage, so there’s no awkward back-and-forth.
Title
Will a salvage yard buy a car without MOT?
Description
A car doesn’t need a valid MOT to be sold for salvage.
They’re not buying it to drive—they’re buying it for parts or scrap value, so the MOT status doesn’t matter. Just make sure you’ve got your V5C logbook or at least the V5C/3 slip so the paperwork’s clean and legal.
Title
What’s the difference between salvage and scrap?
Description
Salvage is an insurance term. It means the car’s been written off, but depending on the category (like Cat S or N), it might still be repairable and legally drivable again. Scrap just means the car’s going to be crushed or broken down for parts or raw materials.
There’s no coming back from scrap; it’s the end of the line. Salvage might still have a second life. Scrap won’t.
Title
Can I sell a salvage car for spares or repairs?
Description
If your car is Cat B, S or N, you’re allowed to sell it as a spares or repairs vehicle. Cat S and N can legally go back on the road if repaired properly. Cat B is more limited — you can sell the parts, but the shell has to be crushed.
So yeah, you can break it up or sell it whole as long as you're clear on the category and what’s legally allowed.
Title
How do I sell my car for parts only?
Description
If you want to sell your car just for parts, there are really two ways to go about it and it depends on how hands-on you want to be.
Option one is the DIY route. You strip the car yourself and sell parts individually — engine, gearbox, doors, lights, etc. You’ll also need to legally declare the car as off the road (SORN it). Once you’re done, arrange to have the shell collected and crushed by a licensed scrap yard.
It can make you more money in theory, but only if you know what you’re doing and have the time to wait for buyers.
Option two is to sell the whole thing as a “spares or repairs” vehicle to a salvage buyer. That’s where we come in. You just enter your reg and postcode, and we’ll connect you with local scrap yards who are specifically looking for damaged or non-runners to break for parts. They’ll collect it for free, pay you instantly and handle all the dismantling.
Title
What’s the process of selling a salvage car?
Description
Selling a salvage car really depends on whether you're selling it privately or scrapping it because the are different for each.
If you're selling it privately as a Cat S or Cat N, you’ll need to list it online (like on Auto Trader or Gumtree), clearly disclosing the salvage status in your listing. Have the V5C logbook ready, alongside repair and insurance history to give buyers peace of mind. Once sold, you give the new keeper slip to the buyer and inform the DVLA that the car’s been sold.
Now, if the car’s beyond repair or not worth selling, the better option is to scrap it through an ATF. In that case, you hand over the V5C to the scrap yard, keeping the yellow section (V5C/3) to notify the DVLA you’ve scrapped the vehicle. The ATF will handle the rest, and you’ll get a Certificate of Destruction.
Title
Do I need the V5C to sell a salvage car?
Description
Technically, no. But we really recommend you have it.
Most private buyers won’t even consider buying a car without the logbook because it just raises too many red flags. Even a lot of scrap yards will turn you away or offer you a lower price if you don’t have it because it complicates the DVLA process.
If you’ve lost it, you can apply for a replacement with a V62 form, which only takes up to 5 working days.
Title
Can I sell my salvage car without fixing it?
Description
If you’re scrapping it, you definitely can. We’ll collect crashed cars, non-runners, those without an MOT, doesn’t matter.
If you’re selling it privately though, you need to be upfront about the damage. Plenty of people buy Cat S and Cat N cars to repair and flip, but they’ll want to know what’s wrong before they commit.
Title
How quickly can I sell my salvage car?
Description
Pretty much as fast as you want. With us, you’ll have a quote in under 30 seconds and in many cases, we can have it collected the same day (or tomorrow at the latest). If you want to go the private route, expect it to take at least a couple of weeks.
Title
Will salvage yards pick up the car?
Description
A lot of yards expect you to arrange transport, especially if the car isn’t drivable. And if they do offer pickup, it might come with a towing fee. One of the reasons people use us is that we work directly with yards to arrange free collection.
Title
Should I sell my salvage car online or to a yard?
Description
Whether to salvage car online or to a yard depends on what kind of car it is and how badly it’s damaged.
If it’s a new, high-value car with light damage — something someone might want to repair and get back on the road — selling it privately might be worthwhile.
If it’s heavily damaged, not running or you just want it gone fast, then going straight to a salvage yard is the quicker, easier and more profitable move. You skip the faff and still get a fair price based on real scrap value.
Title
What’s the best salvage yard to sell my car to?
Description
The best salvage yard to sell your car to is ultimately the one that gives you the best and most immediate offer. They all abide by the same standards.
We’ll sort that for you. When you enter your reg and postcode on our site, we match you with the best buyer near you based on price, availability and collection time.
Title
Can I sell a salvage car if it’s still financed?
Description
No, you can’t legally sell a salvage car (or any car, really) if there’s still finance owing on it. The finance company technically owns the vehicle until the balance is cleared, so you don’t have the legal right to sell or scrap it without their permission.
Now, if the car’s been written off in an accident and it’s under finance, your insurance company will usually step in. They’ll pay out the market value of the car, and that money typically goes straight to the finance company to settle the debt.
If the payout is higher than what you owe, you’ll get the difference. If it’s lower, you might still owe a bit.
Title
Is it worth selling a car with a salvage title?
Description
If the car is repairable and has decent value, you might get more selling it privately to someone looking for a project. But if you just want it gone or the damage is too much, then scrapping it is faster, easier and still gets you decent money.
Title
Do I need to notify the DVLA when selling a salvage car?
Description
Definitely.
If you’re selling it privately, you need to fill out the new keeper section of the V5C and send it to the DVLA (or do it online). If you’re scrapping it through an Authorised Treatment Facility (like we use), you give them the logbook but keep the yellow V5C/3 slip and notify the DVLA that the car’s been scrapped.
Either way, letting the DVLA know is important. Otherwise, you could be hit with a £1,000 fine and still be held responsible for the vehicle, including fines and tax.
Title
Can I sell my junk car to a salvage yard?
Description
Salvage yards buy junk cars all the time. Even if it’s a total non-runner, missing parts, or completely beyond repair, it still has scrap value. In fact, since it’s just the metal they’re after, a brand new Bugatti and a 1999 Ford Focus could be worth almost the same.
You’ll just want to make sure you’re dealing with a licensed ATF so it’s done legally. Ideally, one that’ll collect it for free and pay you instantly (like we do).
